NYFW: Spring 2021 Part III
Here it is, the final part of my recap of the 2021 spring ready-to-wear collections.
Elie Saab
This collection has everything- gorgeous, dreamlike, flowy dresses, structured and tailored pant suits, and everything in between. The first word that came to mind was romantic. I had a hard time choosing which looks to highlight and for good reason. It is everything I love about fashion- editorial and fanciful.
This fully sequined black jumpsuit is perhaps one of my favorite looks of the season with the satin shirt detailing, banded waist and gold bow-tie pin. It is glitzy, it is glamorous...it is perfect. It is a look that, with a quick hem, could easily work on a little person and one I want in my closet.
This white, hand-painted dress with puffy sleeves, a black-and-white banded waist, and POCKETS is stunning...absolutely stunning. First off, it has pockets which instantly make any dress extra special. The banded waist perfectly balances the volume of the sleeves and skirt. I can’t tell from the photo how long it is but, assuming it is floor length, the risk with hemming the dress is that you would cut off the gorgeous print. Would it be worth it? No. The print is too beautiful to alter.
The third look I love is this feminine take on the tuxedo: a jumpsuit with high-waisted, straight-legged black pants and a crisp, white top with a bib-front and puffed sleeves. You can see by the exquisite tailoring that hours and hours of work went into the construction and the final result is flawless. Best part? With a quick, easy hem any person, little or average, would look beautiful in it.
Christian Siriano
Last but certainly not least...Christian Siriano. I’ve loved him ever since he made his first appearance on Project Runway and designed a gorgeous dress out of the wrappings of peanut butter cups. It should come as no surprise that his collection is one of my favorites of the season.
The first look I have to talk about is this ultimate little black dress with puffed sleeves and an asymmetric ruffle. I love the lines and flounce of the skirt. Could it be altered? Unfortunately...no. To make this dress work for a little person you would have to entirely de-construct and then re-construct. That being said, I would want to wear this anytime and anywhere.
The second look I want have to talk about is this striking all-white pant suit with a cape. This is just pure perfection. I love the freshness of the white, the perfect tailoring and the drama of the cape. The white hat and matching beaded mask complete the look. This is an outfit that works on any and every body.
The third look I have to talk about closed the show- an all-red gown with a breathtaking, flouncing train. It is everything I love about Siriano’s designs- impeccably constructed, the perfect balance between hard and soft. While this is another look that couldn’t be simply hemmed for a little person, it is one that would make any woman feel pretty and powerful.
What I love about Christian Siriano is that he designs for every body type. He has models of every size walk his runways, embraces curves and makes every woman he dresses look and feel their best.
Thomas Carlyle once said, “No pressure, no diamonds.” Well, under intense pressure and extenuating circumstances, fashion designers produced more than a few diamonds this season that truly sparkled.
