My First New York Fashion Week: Part III
All good things must come to an end…
Bibhu Mohapatra
After seeing this collection, I am embarrassed to say I had never heard of Bibhu Mohapatra until this season. This collection had me ooo-ing and ahh-ing (my boss’s can verify). The opening look immediately captured my attention. I love the beautiful simplicity of this dress. It can either be dressed-up or down, depending on the occasion, would be easy to alter, and is flattering on nearly every body type.
Another look I la-la-loved came right on the opener’s heels with a beautifully pleated cream and white skirt and a draped creamed color top with open sleeves. This outfit looks effortless yet you can see how much work went into every pleat, the precision in the detailing along the hem and sleeves of the blouse. This collection exemplifies why fashion is a form of art.
Prabul Gurung
Prabul Gurung first appeared on my radar in 2013 when he designed costumes for the New York City Ballet’s fall gala. I fell in love with his costumes for the ballet Capricious Maneuvers and was not disappointed in his fall 2020 collection. Deciding upon my favorite looks was a challenge as there were so many to choose from.
I audibly gasped when I saw the opening look (my intern can confirm). This black and white menswear inspired suit is stunning. Yes, there is detailing on the pants, but hemming them would not ruin the design. This ensemble is sleek, it’s sharp, and guaranteed to turn heads.
This next look is everything and I mean EVERYTHING. From the color, to the seaming and how it draws your eye into the waist, to the collar and don’t get me started on the boa. Impeccably made, this dress would work on any body type.
Because I love this collection so much, I had to discuss a third look. This chocolate colored, long-sleeved, bejeweled dress with the draped neckline and the high slit is a knockout.
Okay, I can’t help myself. One more because COME ON. She looks like a modern-day Cinderella, only more fabulous.
Michael Kors
I fell in love with Michael Kors way back in 2004 during the first season of Project Runway. One of my favorite designers, his fall 2020 collection blew me away. Equestrian inspired, to me, this was the epitome of classic American style.
The first look that immediately captured my attention was this tan military-inspired cape trench coat and long grey pleated skirt. I love the play with proportions and the structure of the jacket against the freeness (Is that a word?) of the skirt. Could this work on a little person? Absolutely.
This leather shirt dress halted me mid-scroll. This dress is all about the details: the pleating (how do you pleat leather?!), the double belts, the gold chain on the black boots. It’s everything.
